Communication has many and varied meanings. To be effective, it should be open to all people within the organization.
The communication process that links management and the practice of management is complex. Managers perform the communication function in the management of organizations. As such, managers must know and understand the communication process to meet the demands of the organization.
The communication process must be initiated by the managers in his organization by following the basic principles of management.
Effective management is finding a successful means of communicating ideas to other people within the organization.
Since communicating with the subordinates is the responsibility of the manager, he must have time with each subordinate. However, there are problems in the manager’s downward communication. Unless the manager has a proper sense of timing, he might fail at something he hopes to achieve for the organization. He should, therefore, arrange his time so that communicating with his subordinates will be prominent in his work schedule.
While subordinate-initiated communication is important in the management of organizations, much of the communication is one-way:
from superiors to subordinates.
Bottom-up or upward communication has its virtues. But it is management-initiated communication.
Communication can change human behavior. So, subordinates should be given the opportunity to initiate communication to their superiors.
Certainly, helpful information can be secured from subordinates, if they will not be limited to submitting management’s required report.
